Photos for Identification - Can You Identify These People?
Got Mennonite family photos that you can't identify? Maybe you know the decade or place that they were taken, but there's one mysterious person who you just can't identify. Why not send us a scan (queries at mennonitehistory.org). We'll place it here and advise the MHSA e-list that it's here.
You'll immediately have a whole host of like-minded persons who just might be able to help out with a critical detail that starts you on the path of fact.
Check out our Success Stories! And if you're interested in other Mennonite photographic collections (e.g. to compare backgrounds, clothing styles, etc.), a large one can be found online at Mennonite Church Archives (North Newton, KS). And, for background on those photos on 4" x 6" stiff cardstock known as "cabinet cards", see an interesting article by Kim Powell at About.com.
another set of Mennonite images that need identification help can be found at the Mennonite Church USA Archives "unidentified" selection.

2010.020 Submitter: Sandi Massie (ksmassie at shaw.ca) Persons: I found this photo in my Grandfather Johann Hiebert's things. The back of the picture claims that these two people are a Grandpa and Grandma Penner. The back claims that they are the Maternal Grandparents of a Peter Nachtigall (GRANDMA #1108184 b. 1914 in Ebenfeld, Ukraine who married my Grandfather Hiebert's niece, Margaretha "Gretel" Huebert (#1108178 b. 24 Aug 1919 in Waldheim, Molotschna).

2010.015 Submitter: Ellie Schartner (oregenell at telus.net) Context: I believe the couple in the 2010.015 and also shown in 2010.016 are the same people; one taken when they were young, and the other with their family.
My thoughts are that their surname is probably Neufeld or Penner, but I am not sure. They were with images of those in the family of Johann W. Neufeld (GRANDMA #42526)
2010.014 Submitter: Ellie Schartner (oregenell at telus.net) Context: This is Peter Neufeld (17 March 1859 - 08 Aug 1933), my great grandfather's brother. He was born in the Chortitza Colony and lived in the Kuban Colony in the late 1800s. He married, but there is no record of his wife or children, or what happened to the family. I don't know where he died, but probably in Russia. I would like to know if anyone descended from Peter left Russia. The above two images 2010.015 and 2010.016) could be related to this Peter.
2010.013 Submitter: Betty Stryk (pstryk1 at yahoo.com) Context: This photo and the 12 others submitted by Betty Stryk that follow, were found in her Aunt Agatha's album). Agatha Janzen was her father's (Henry Janzen) sister. She was married to Jacob Kethler (sometimes Ketler) and immigrated to Canada Dec 1923/Jan 1924 from Grunfeld, Chortitza, settling first in Herbert, SK and then in Steinbach, MB. In the 1970s they lived in Winnipeg, MB. Jacob died in 1968 and Agatha remarried John Peters in 1970. She died in 1988 and she never had children.
Can anyone identify the people in the photos (2010.001-2010.013)?
2010.008 Submitter: Betty Stryk (pstryk1 at yahoo.com) Context: See 2010.013 above. This photo shows Betty's Aunt Agatha and Uncle Jake Kethler on the right on this photo and 2010.029..

2009.027 Submitter: MHSA (queries at mennonitehistory.org) Context: This photo was donated to the MHSA without any other documentation. On the reverse "Anna Friesen" are the only words.
Does anyone recognize the people or building or location?
2009.026 Submitter: Judith Rempel (rempel at shaw.ca) Context: I've labeled this Wilhelm Rempel (b 1840 Osterwick), but am not terribly certain it's correct (GRANDMA #186597) - if if that is correct, he and I are not related. I don't even know where I got the photograph. What I have is a contemporary copy (printed in B/W on Kodak paper).
Does anyone have a better idea or a claim to the image?
2009.025 Submitter: Karin Bock (karinb at sasktel.net) Context:
Karin's exhausted family's help in identifying the people in the following nine photos. Her mother was born Katharina (Tina) Braun, to Helena (nee Martens). Katharina married Gerhard G. Bock (whose mother was Susanna Dueck). Susanna was widowed before immigrating to Canada and had a second marriage here to Jacob Rempel - so the photos that are shown here may be relatives of that branch.
Other sunames in the linage are Wiens, Redekop, and Klassen.

Context:
Photographs 2009.016 and 2009.017 are from the same place. This photo has an inscription on the back (click on reverse).
Konstantin doesn't don't know who the photographed people are, but thinks they may be related to Aganetha Tjart (G #896916), Aganetha's husband Peter Loewen, or to her second husband David Koerber.
Aganetha Tjart (1881-1946) was daughter of Jacob Johann Tjart (1852-1918) and Elisabeth Hamm (1852-?).

Konstantin's grandfather wrote on the back of this photo: "Alternative service, Peter Loewen on extreme right". The others are unknown. Peter (1881-1922) was married to Aganetha Tjart.
When and where might Peter Loewen have done his alternative service.

2008.010 Submitter: Wanda Funk (whfm at shaw.ca) Persons:
Johann (b 19 Jul 1849) and Katharina (b Friesen 13 Feb 1855, d 24 Mar 1900) Funk & some of their children. I'm submitting this photo to help establish a probable time line for 2008.004 & the likely connection to the other seven photos. Katharina Friesen Funk gave birth to her last child (pictured on her lap) on 15 Feb 1899. Photo taken late 1899 or early 1900. Johann and Katharina Funk's daughter Agatha (b 14 Sep, 1875) married Abram Harder (b 23 Nov 1876). All eight of these photos ultimately ended up, in the care, of Abram and Agatha Harder's granddaughter. Comments:Photo taken late 1899 or early 1900 and now held by Abram & Agatha Harder's granddaughter.
2008.009 Submitter: Wanda Funk (whfm at shaw.ca) Persons:

Missionary Abraham Johan (son of Johan pictured in 2008.002 and Maria (nee Martens, 1861-1917) Friesen. Comments:
My Great Grandfather went to live with them in 1883, for about 7-10 years, after his mother died. I am
trying to make their connection to the family.
2007.018 Submitter: Bob Walde (bob.marj at sasktel.net) Persons:
This is a photo of Great Grandfather Heinrich Wiebe (b 22 Dec 1844 Neuendorf, Chortitza, d 29 Nov 1919 Orloff, Zagradovka) with his second wife Widow Friesen. Comments: Heinrich's first wife was Anna Loetkemann (b 11 Sept 1854 Friedensruh, Molotschna).
Question: Can anyone identify Wiebe's second wife (pictured above) and her family?
