Windows to the West Reserve: A Mennonite Heritage Preservation NewsletterNo. 2 - 13 Apr 2002Lawrence Klippenstein, Editor (See WWR Contacts for details of those mentioned in this issue.) The Winkler Heritage Society is taking the second issue of its newsletter, Legacy Links, to the printers these days. The first issue appeared on January 15, 2002. Sally Harms is the editor. On May 26 the Winkler Heritage Society is hosting a program prepared by descendants of Jewish families who once lived in Winkler. A memorial for these families will be unveiled at the time. For more details contact Abe Suderman. The town of Plum Coulee has received a grant from descendants of Jewish families who once lived in Plum Coulee. It will be used to develop cultural and heritage aspects of the community. For more details contact Cleo Heinrichs. A historic building was recently destroyed by fire in Neubergthal a few miles east of Altona. See the recent issue of Heritage Posting for details. Neubergthal was declared a National Historic Site by Parks Canada about a decade ago. The village of Chortitz near Winkler is planning to unveil a cairn at its local cemetery "In remembrance of our forefathers". Date: July 28. For details contact Mavis Dyck. The Altbergthal Heritage Group is working on three projects: renovating the school building (now located in Altona near the Pioneer Centre) for a museum (it will be 100 years old in 2004), cleaning up the old village cemetery (about three miles west of Altona), and writing a history of the community (see the concluding essay in a new book, Church, Family and Villaqe, available in the book store here at the sessions). For details contact Ray Klippenstein. The village of Reinland recently published a new edition of its community history, Reinland: An Experience in Community, written by Peter Zacharias of Blumenort. The Henry Loewen family descendants, with connections in the old school district of Silberfeld northeast of Gretna, and the town of Gretna, are planning a reunion in Gretna on 14 July 2002. For details contact Benno Loewen. The Post Road Heritage Society (Emerson-based) is working on a heritage trail to be placed in the Fort Dufferin Park. For details contact Dick Remus.
