Vital Records

Vital Records are normally considered to be those which are documented by a govenrment body (or their designate) pertaining to the "vital" (i.e., life) events of birth, marriage and death. Non-official records such as obituaries, funeral bulletins, birth announcements are not considered vital records. Today in Canada, vital records are normally prepared under the authority of the province. Historically, Mennonite church records have effectively been the best documentation of vital events.
