Question: Can anyone identify these people or other details?

Posted 8 Jun 2007

Comment from Glenn Penner:   I immediately recognized the photo. They are Jacob Rempel (GM#154329) and Katharina Penner (GM#183035). Several members of my extended family have copies of this photo. I suspect it was taken just before the family left Manitoba for Saskatchewan or shortly after arriving in Sask., and copies were given to various relatives including my great grandfather, who was a half-brother to Mrs. Rempel. Comment from Al Rempel: While it is possible more than one photographer used same backdrop, which was used both in studio and in farmhomes, I believe this shot may be by the Gretna photographer JC Voigt.  Too bad bottom of photo is cutoff, but the flourish in writing there looks like Voigt's signature, which is engraved on a shot I have of my GGF Rempel, using this same backdrop in his kitchen of Amsterdam area farmhouse.  From Glenn's identification, this photograph can be dated to ca 1895, and it is believed that Voigt died in 1895.  If anyone knows anything more on JC Voigt, please contact me: alrempel at shaw.ca.
