Census for Chortitza Colony, 1858
Showing Data for Yazykovo residents of 1872 and 1873
Introduction
Extracted by Tim Janzen
The tables associated with this page contain the data taken from the
1858 Chortitza Colony Census for the residents later living in the Yazykovo
Colony in 1872 and 1873.
The original document is found in Fund F-59, Inventory 1, File
3 in the Zaporozhye Archives, Zaporozhye, Ukraine, and is written
in Russian. It was compiled by Jacob Braun, the Nikolaifeld district
mayor. The file was begun in November 7, 1872 and was completed August
17, 1873.
These tables are very important and should be used in conjunction with
the 1869 Nikolaifeld Colony Census
and the 1873 Yazykovo Colony Census
because these tables contain some types of information not included
in those later censuses.
Of significant interest is the fact that the 1858 census tables give
the first name of the fathers of both the male heads of households and
their wives listed in the 1873 Yazykovo Colony Census. In most cases
the tables also give the first name of the grandfather of each head
of household as well. In cases where the head of household's father
had died by the time of the 1858 Chortitza Colony Census was taken,
the tables give the name of a relative that the head of household was
living with in 1858, who in most cases is stated to have been their
brother or their uncle.
Also of significant importance is the fact that these tables provide
the village name and household number where that particular head of
household was listed in the 1858 Chortitza Colony Census. I have standardized
the spellings of both the given names and surnames of the people listed
in the original document.
The tables provide the names and ages of a total of 446 people who
were listed in the 1858 Chortitza Colony Census. The following is a
breakdown by village of total number of residents listed in this document:
The population totals are given for most of the villages in the original
document. Where the totals are not provided in the original document
I have added that information in bold type. In a few cases the totals
provided in the original document are incorrect. In those cases I have
added the correct totals in parentheses in bold type.
The data in the original document is organized first by the various
Yazykovo Colony villages. Within each Yazykovo Colony village the data
then organized by the specific villages in the Chortitza Colony that
the Yazykovo Colony settlers were from. The first column in the table
gives the number of heads of families for each village in the Chortitza
Colony that the Yazykovo Colony settlers were from.
The second column provides a cross-reference to the 1873 Yazykovo Colony
Census, giving the household number for each particular head of household
in that census. This data is given in the original document only for
the villages of Eichenfeld and for Hochfeld. I have added the household
numbers for the other villages to help provide a complete cross-reference.
The information that I have added appears in bold type. It appears that
the household numbers for the residents of Hochfeld were changed between
when this document was compiled and when the 1873 Yazykovo Colony Census
was taken. For this village I have added the correct household numbers
from the 1873 census in parentheses in bold type.
The third column gives the names of people who were listed in the 1858
Chortitza Colony Census who subsequently moved to the Yazykovo Colony
and who were residing there in 1872 and 1873. The patronymic names are
given for both the husbands and their wives such that the given name
of an individual is followed by their father's first name. For many
of the heads of families that person's father's father's first name
is also given.
The fourth and fifth columns give the ages of these individuals at
the time the 1858 Chortitza Colony Census was taken. The sixth column
gives the name of the village and the homestead number where the heads
of households were listed in the 1858 Chortitza Colony Census. I have
also added a seventh column in which I have entered the Grandma numbers
for the heads of families who appear in the Grandma 3 database.
In comparison to the 1873 Yazykovo Colony Census, these tables seem
to provide a complete list of the heads of households in the Yazykovo
Colony in 1873. The following are the heads of families who appear in
this document but who don't appear in the 1873 Yazykovo Colony Census:
- Nikolaifeld: Johann Klassen
- Adelsheim: Jacob Wiebe and Peter Kasper
- Hochfeld: Martin Koslowsky, Cornelius De Fehr, Cornelius Lehn, Heinrich
- Petkau, Peter Klassen, Johan Neustaedter, and Abraham Neustaedter.
