Title and Physical Description

Biographical History
Henry D. Goerzen was born in Didsbury to David H. Goerzen to one of the earliest settling Russian Mennonite families in Alberta. Henry married Erna and they maintain a grain farm in the Didsbury area with the help of their son. Henry has been an avid historian for much of his life, spending the last 25 years collecting Alberta Mennonite records, books and artifacts. This collection of materials, mostly on behalf of the Mennonite Conference Alberta, formed the base of the Mennonite Historical Society of Alberta resources, for which he was the first chairman. The MHSA records and books were moved to the MHSA Library & Archives in Calgary in summer 2001. When the Library & Archives were officially launched in October 2001, honourary memberships were awarded to Henry and Erna for their longstanding service to Mennonite history in Alberta.

Apart from farming, church life (Bergthal Mennonite Church), and historical interests, Henry has played an active role in many congregational, Mennonite Church Alberta, Mennonite Central Committee & other activities. He is also an artist who works in various media and a wide range of subjects.
