Title and Physical Description
Coaldale Mennonite Church fonds. -- 1968-1989. -- 8 cm of textual records
Administrative
History
The Coaldale Mennonite Church was began its services in 1926
and formally organized in 1928. Initially services were conducted in
the local United Church. A building program began in 1931 and services
were held in the basement. The completed building was dedicated on January
10, 1937, with a subsequent building program in 1957. P.P. Dyck is considered
the founding leader of the group. The congregation originated through
immigration from the Soviet Union. The congregation was affiliated with
the Mennonite Church Alberta from 1928 to 2000, Mennonite Church Canada
from 1929 to 2000, and General Conference Mennonite Church from 1929
to 1999. In 2000 the congregation withdrew from the Mennonite Church
Alberta (and by default Mennonite Church Canada) because of disagreement
with the conference's approach to calling congregations to accountability
on theological and lifestyle issues. Until the 1960s, the language in
use was German; now the language of worship is English and German.
Originally, the Mennonite Brethren and General Conference Mennonites
in Coaldale worshipped together.
