Title and Physical Description
Camp Valaqua fonds. -- 1981-1989. -- 25.5 cm of textual records

Administrative/Biographical History
Camp Valaqua was established in 1958 at Water Valley, Alberta under the auspices of the Mennonite Church of Alberta (then Conference of Mennonites in Alberta) in conjunction with the Alberta Mennonite Youth Organization. The role of Camp Valaqua was to be a recreational, wilderness camp to allow for a varied program - one not possible at the temporary site at the Menno Bible Institute the two previous years. Active discussion led to a decision not to make it a "youth farm".

The committee appointed to explore the possibilities, costs and possible location was comprised of Joe Neufeld and Cornie Hildebrandt of Didsbury, and Abe Sawatzky of Calgary. The committee expanded to develop policies and programs and then included: Jake Harder of Carstairs as Chairman, Erwin Dueck of Edmonoton as Secretary and the following general members: Henry Rempel of Sundre; Cornie Hildebrandt of Didsbury; and Peter Dick, Peter Braul, Dick Boschman, and Rev. P.A. Unger all of Calgary. Initially the camp accommodation consisted of tents and makeshift shelters, but in 1960 a main hall/chapel building and a cabin were built. An additional four cabins were built in 1961 and a naming contest established "Camp Valaqua". Upgrading and expansion has taken place over the years, including an additional eight cabins, a washroom-shower complex, cook's cabin, administration building, etc.
