Peter Goertzen (1941-2007)

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Goertzen, former curator of the Grande Prairie Museum and the Mennonite Village Museum in Steinbach, Manitoba.

Peter entered the presence of the Lord, his eternal Saviour, at 7:30 am on Sunday, September 30th in La Crete, Alberta with his family at his side.  Peter had an immense passion for studying the origins of the Mennonites.  He wrote two family histories; the Goertzen family history (Gerhard and Helena (Reddekop) Goertzen) and a Teichroeb family history (Peter Johann and Justina (Wolf) Teichroeb).  Late in the 1970s he was able to bring back a copy of the Old Colony registers from Mexico which was a significant contribution to Mennonite genealogical research.  Peter served as the northern representative for the Mennonite Historical Society of Alberta for a period of time.
